What is Female Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder?

The issue of sexual desire is a very personal one, and yet, it is a topic that deserves appropriate analysis and understanding. Throughout life, both men and women will experience hormonal fluctuations that can impact their desire to be sexually active. However, when it comes to hypoactive sexual desire disorder, the majority of diagnosed cases are amongst women. So, what does female hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) entail, and how can it be treated? Allow us to explain.

Understanding Female HSDD

As the name suggests, female HSDD is a condition in which a woman has little to no desire to engage in sexual intercourse with her partner and feels she cannot physically or emotionally respond to sexual overtures within her supportive and loving relationship. While it may be normal for women to not want to engage in sex every time their partner broaches the topic, what sets HSDD apart from a more routine lack of interest is that the lack of sexual desire persists, causing distress in the woman and/or her partner.

What Causes HSDD?

Although there are a variety of factors that can lead to female HSDD, being involved in a sexually active relationship and fluctuations in hormones are two major contributors. In most cases, women seek help for their lack of sexual desire at the request of a partner. Although a lack of interest in sex is not an immediate indicator of HSDD, lack of interest that leads to distress can be.

Fluctuations in hormones–often brought on by menopause–can also lead to HSDD. This is one of the reasons many believe HSDD to be more common in women than in men–women go through a series of changes on the hormonal and physical level as they go through menopause.
