Cervical Cancer in Houston, TX
Almost 13,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, and almost one-third of new diagnoses result in death. At North Cypress Women’s Center, board-certified (gynecological) surgeon Dr. Farhina Imtiaz monitors her patients closely for signs of cervical cancer with the goal being to reduce rates amongst women in Houston and the surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy.
What is Cervical Cancer?
Like other types of cancer, cervical cancer is the result of cell mutations in a woman’s cervix. When cervical cancer is diagnosed, it is categorized as:
- Adenocarcinoma that occurs in specific cells found in the cervical canal
- Squamous cell carcinoma that occurs in the cells found in the lining of the outer cervix
Dr. Imtiaz recommends that her female patients have routine cervical cancer screenings to locate any problems early and enhance treatment outcomes.
Pap Smear Benefits
A Pap smear, also known as a Pap test, involves taking cell samples from inside the cervix. It is a screening tool to detect pre-cancer changes in the cervix or may on occasion diagnose cervical cancer. The sample is sent to a lab for processing. The lab technician examines the cells under a microscope looking for any abnormal cells. Dr. Imtiaz may also perform a test for human papillomavirus (HPV) that is known to lead to cervical cancer in some women.
What Areas are Affected by Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer affects the lower section of the uterus that connects to the vagina. This cancer can spread to neighboring tissues and organs.
How is Cervical Cancer Treated?
Treatment for cervical cancer is based upon the stage of the cancer and other health considerations. Dr. Imtiaz may recommend:
- For early stage cases, hysterectomy surgery to remove the uterus and cervix. If the cancer has spread, the lymph nodes and a portion of the vagina are also removed
- Radiation treatment
- Chemotherapy

Is Cervical Cancer Screening Right for Me?
Cervical cancer can affect any woman, but certain factors place you at higher risk, such as:
- Smoking
- Early sexual activity (due to potential for contracting HPV)
- Weakened immune system
- History of sexually transmitted infections
- Multiple sex partners
If the results of your Pap smear and other tests indicate that you have abnormal cells in your cervix or cervical canal, Dr. Imtiaz will recommend an appropriate course of treatment.
