Endometrial Ablation in Houston, TX

If you have heavy bleeding during your periods, board-certified (gynecological) surgeon Dr. Farhina Imtiaz may recommend endometrial ablation to treat the lining of your uterus. At North Cypress Women’s Center, Dr. Imtiaz offers endometrial ablation to women in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy

What is Endometrial Ablation?

Endometrial ablation refers to a procedure that surgically removes the lining of the uterus. The procedure is non-surgical and performed on an outpatient basis in our office. The goal of endometrial ablation is to reduce menstrual bleeding. In some women, the procedure completely stops menstrual bleeding.

Endometrial Ablation Benefits

Dr. Imtiaz will recommend endometrial ablation if you are at risk for developing complications due to heavy blood loss during your period. In most cases, the bleeding leads to anemia, a condition that can lead to further complications.

When is Endometrial Ablation Recommended?

Endometrial ablation is recommended for women who:

  • Become anemic due to heavy menstrual periods
  • Have heavy menstrual bleeding, as defined by needing to change the pad or tampon every two hours or less
  • Experience menstrual bleeding for more than eight days

How is Endometrial Ablation Performed?

Removing the lining of the uterus can be achieved by way of several techniques. Dr. Imtiaz will recommend the technique that is right for your specific case. She may recommend:

  • Cryoablation that involves freezing the uterine lining with small ice balls
  • Radiofrequency or microwave energy to heat and vaporize the lining of the uterus
  • Electrosurgery that is based on using a tiny heated loop of wire
  • Heat treatment using saline solution or a specially-designed balloon

Endometrial Ablation Preparation

Before recommending endometrial ablation, Dr. Imtiaz will prescribe medications and/or an IUD to try to decrease bleeding without changing the lining of the uterus. She will monitor how well these options work. If the results are less than optimum, she will recommend endometrial ablation.

Endometrial Ablation Recovery

Full recovery from endometrial ablation typically takes about two weeks to three months. You will notice a gradual reduction in the amount of bleeding during your periods. Some women have no bleeding at all after endometrial ablation. You can still become pregnant after endometrial ablation.

How Much Does Endometrial Ablation Cost in Houston?

Your treatment for menstrual bleeding with endometrial ablation may be covered by medical insurance. In order for you to plan financially for the treatment, our patient coordinator will review your out-of-pocket costs. Payment can be made by cash, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is Endometrial Ablation Right for Me?

Dr. Imtiaz recommends endometrial ablation for women who experience heavy or lengthy bleeding during menstruation. She will recommend the procedure if the bleeding is not controlled with other methods. You may not be a good candidate for endometrial ablation if you:

  • Have or are at risk for uterine cancer
  • Have a pelvic infection
  • Have certain abnormalities of the uterus that interfere with the outcomes of the procedure
  • Desire pregnancy in the future
