Bioidentical Hormones: What are They and How are They Used?

These days, science is full of unique discoveries that lead to great improvements in health and quality of life. With so many new developments out there, it can be challenging to keep track of them all, let alone understand why each one matters. Bioidentical hormones are one such topic that is starting to become more widely known. If you have been curious about what is behind the hype, we are here to help.

What are Bioidentical Hormones?

To understand bioidentical hormones, let’s first take a step back and discuss traditional hormone replacement therapy. Historically, hormone replacement therapy has been used to help women and men regulate hormone changes that occur at different stages of life. Unfortunately, traditional hormone replacement therapy can often require large doses of supplements, and result in unwanted side effects in the process of achieving the desired results.

That is where bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) comes in. With BHRT, the hormones are designed to be more chemically similar to the hormones that your body already naturally creates. This means that, in many cases, patients require lower doses of the supplemental hormones, and notice far fewer side effects than they would with traditional hormone replacement therapy.

How are Bioidentical Hormones Used?

Just as with traditional hormone replacement therapy, BHRT can be used to address a wide range of symptoms including insomnia or sleeping problems, low libido, anxiety, depression, mood swings, menopause/perimenopause, reduced energy and fatigue, concentration problems, increased weight, body weakness and joint pain.

Although BHRT tends to work faster than traditional methods, it can still take time to find the correct dosage for your body. As a result, it is important to remain patient and continue to note any changing symptoms as you work with your doctor to determine the best supplement levels for your needs.

At North Cypress Women’s Center, Dr. Imtiaz is proud to offer BHRT to men and women in Houston and the surrounding areas. In many cases, she may recommend administering BHRT via BioTE® Hormone Pellet Therapy.
