Some women in Houston and surrounding areas of Texas, including Cypress, Sugarland, and Katy, prefer the convenience of an IUD, but not the placement in the uterus. Dr. Farhina Imtiaz, a board-certified (gynecological) surgeon at North Cypress Women’s Center, offers NEXPLANON® as an alternative to IUDs and other types of contraception.

What is NEXPLANON®?

NEXPLANON® is a long-term contraceptive device that is implanted in your arm versus uterine implantation of IUDs. The flexible device is approximately the same length as a toothpick. It is proven to be 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy, and the NEXPLANON® device can stay in your arm for up to three years.

NEXPLANON® Benefits

NEXPLANON® is preferred amongst women because:

  • You do not have to remember to take pills
  • The device is not inserted into the uterus

When Can I Use NEXPLANON®?

NEXPLANON® is a long-term contraceptive device that stays in your arm for up to three years. As long as the device is in the arm, you are protected against pregnancy.

How Do I Use NEXPLANON®?

Dr. Imtiaz inserts NEXPLANON® just under the skin on the inside of the upper arm. Within 24 hours, the device begins to release hormones. The hormones work with your body to prevent pregnancy.

NEXPLANON® Preparation

Because NEXPLANON® should not be used by women who are pregnant, Dr. Imtiaz will ask if you believe that you are pregnant. If you are uncertain, she may order a pregnancy test. Dr. Imtiaz will also review your medical history to determine if you have a history of any medical problems that may preclude you from using NEXPLANON® for contraception.

NEXPLANON® Recovery

You will have some changes to your menstrual cycle, such as lighter bleeding. After insertion of NEXPLANON®, your periods may be longer or shorter, and your menstrual cycle may be irregular.

How Much Does NEXPLANON® Cost in Houston?

NEXPLANON® is covered by most medical insurance policies. Your insurance carrier will determine your out-of-pocket expenses. You can pay for your portion with cash, major credit card or CareCredit® financing.

Is NEXPLANON® Right for Me?

While NEXPLANON® is not recommended for certain women, the long-lasting contraceptive device may be right for you if you want the convenience of an IUD but do not want a device in your uterus.
